When he was 14 years old, he entered the woods as a cook's flunky in a logging camp. In the years following, he sat fire lookout for the U.S. Forest Service, surveying the Going to the Sun Highway in Glacier National Park and (in the 1920s) somehow scraped his way into the University of Montana in Missoula.
