Commissioned as a chaplain in World War II, he served from 1940-1945. Hanson founded the Blue Jacket Choir at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center that broadcast each week on CBS radio. Chaplain Hanson played himself in the 1944 film, The Navy Way. Molly Pitcher was a nickname given to a woman said to have fought in the American Revolutionary War Battle of Monmouth who is generally believed to have been Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley. At the battle in June 1778, Mary Hays attended to the soldiers by given them water. As her injured husband was carried from the battlefield, Mary took his place at the cannon. The story told is that at one point, a British musket ball flew between her legs and tore off the bottom of her skirt, after which she is said to have exclaimed that it could have been worse.
