1 H. Outram Evennett Spirit Of The Counter-Reformation
University of Notre Dame Press 1991-02-28 0268004250 / 9780268004255 Paperback Used. Good Paperback
Used trade paperback in G condition. Unmarked pages, tight binding, minor outer page-edge soil, visible rubbing on cover. Frontispiece missing from book. Edited with a postscript by John Bossy. xiii+159 pages. This book, based on H. Outram Evennett's Birkbeck Lectures of 1951, represents some twenty years' work on the sources of the Counter-Reformation. Dr. Evennett isolates the special and positive characteristics of the Counter-Reformation and accounts for them in relation to the environment in which they developed. He sees in the spirit of the Counter-Reformation an attempt not to check but to extend and come to terms with the more individualistic and modern environment in which the Catholic Church found itself. The Jesuits are treated as agents of this change. Dr. John Bossy has edited these lectures for publications and added a postscript, analyzing some of the problems raised in the years since the lectures were delivered. Professor David Knowles pays tribute to Evennett's memory in a Foreword. H. Outram Evennett was a University Lecturer in History at Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity College.
